I am one of the owners of the Vision 2000 Travel Group in Alberta;
we have offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray and I am
in charge of the technology. I live in the community of Bridgeland
in NE Calgary, and specifically in the Bridges project which was
developed after our far-sighted provincial government imploded
the General Hospital in 1998. I live in the Vento condominium project,
a LEED Platinum Certified building and we subscribe to Bullfrog
to provide our electrical power from renewable energy sources.
I live with my partner Carey.
I have been a cyclist most of my life, although it may be a stretch
to refer to myself as an avid cyclist. I cycled allot when I lived
in Winnipeg, commuting to university and then to work on my bike.
My first big bike trip was in 1972 when I put my bike on a train
in Ottawa and headed to Truro, Nova Scotia. Armed with my sleeping
bag, tent, sterno burner and not much else, I cycled and camped
around Nova Scotia and PEI for 2 weeks. I learned all about the
joy of cycling up hills with a heavily laden bike on that trip
...
When I moved to Calgary in 1980, I did not bike much for the first
few years, but then the call came from Mike in 1988 to take our
bikes to the mountains and do a bike-camping trip. So began the
history of the Warthogs, in the same fashion as my first bike trip
more than a decade earlier, by putting the bikes on a train ….
I am probably best described as a cautious rider, and steep inclines,
downhills over loose rocks and being too close to the edge of a
cliff scare the bejeesus out of me. I am also a plodder, and can
cover great distances, but typically lag behind the rest of the
hogs as they cheerily sprint along ahead.
Although music is an important part of my life (I volunteer for
CKUA, the world’s best radio station, and the Calgary Folk
Festival), I cannot personally strike a harmonius chord and am
frequently ostracized when I try to sing along or drum along with
the rest of the more musically-talented hogs. Nonetheless I persevere,
to their collective chagrin ...
I share the goals of our esteemed Head Wartmeister, I will, however,
add the trans-Canada Trail (maybe bits each year) as a life-long
dream. |
